Traveling by train from Marseille to Florence

This October I will be traveling with friends through France and Italy.

We have most of our arrangements made but are not sure how we are going to get from Marseille to Florence. We would like to go by train but it seems difficult to make the reservations on the internet from the U.S. Can we purchase our train tickets once we arrive in Marseille? That seems a little risky. And does anyone know what it will cost? Thanks.

well not easy, but doable ....

first TGV train from Marseille to Nice, departure time 8.28am - arrival time 11.00am

go to : www.voyages-sncf. com enter english on bottom left

choose your dep town : marseille, the date, then enter 8.00 (hour)

then enter arrival town : nice

if they ask to choose between town options follow the instructions.

when you have got the journey details, choose first or second class, enter your age, choose your seat, give your name and pay by credit card, the site is secured. Then 2 options :

the one : collect your tickets from an automatic ticket machine with the bank card used for the payment

the two : collect your ticket at the station desk, with the reference of your file and the credit card used for the payment.

NO OTHER WAY

Then,go to : www.raileurope.com

you have a train from Nice to Firenze, dep. 13.47pm -arr 22.00pm

proceed at the same way to buy your tickets and normally they will be sent in USA ...

Hope you can do it, can't help more ...good luck

Hi another suggestion is to buy your tickets on the net from Marseille to Nice with the TGV (reservation obligatory) and then buy your tickets from Nice to Florence (reservation not obligatory) at the station counter in Nice, you shoud have enough time

The costs vary according to the speed of the train. You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.com but it is highly unlikely you will be able to book through this site, as it hardly ever accepts cards issued outside Europe. Just buy the train tickets in Italy.

You should be able book and pay for this journey online from http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ if you can manage the French language, though possibly not, as once I have selected a train, the site is currently telling me to try later due to a technical error. But the costs are certainly available online - choose the most expensive as you will not be entitled to any advance booking discounts if you buy in Marseille.

Be warned that the fastest journey (10 hours 13 minutes) offered online by SNCF includes a seven minute transfer at Nice off a TER commuter train from Marseille - you would be well advised to choose an option with a longer transfer time than this.

Otherwise buy in Marseille, preferably at least the day before departure as the booking will take time.
