10 days in Provence

We will be traveling to Provence in June for ten days. We will arrive in Barcelona, where we'll rent a car and make our way to Provence. Would Avignon be a good central location to stay in while making day trips? Any suggestions/recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

The area around Avignon, but not Avignon itself, is a good place for a base. I recommend that you get a copy of the Michelin Green Guide to Provence and decide what you'd like to see. The viamichelin.com web site is also useful for itineraries and driving distances, but the estimates of elapsed time should be taken with several grains of sea salt.

Glad that you are considering establishing a single base. But, you seriously need to consider what "type" of base you want. Some people want a more "urban," experience, while many others want a more "village-type," experience - personally, I urge you to consider the "village-type," since that will provide you with a more "real" Provence experience.

For the entire month of September, ever since '95, we have based ourselves in the lovely village of Maussane-les-Alpilles, which sits just below Les Baux-de-Provance, and is close to both St. Remy and Arles. We find Maussane to be a great, well-centered base for exploring virtually all of Western Provnece, while some would argue for a base somewhat more to the North - to each his/her own. We love it because it is beautiful, has good access to major roads which allow us quick access to important sites ( we always return to our base via the most scenic routes ), and has a wonderful town square with some good restaurants that serve good regional food. What's not to love!

Welcome to the Forum, Cherry. Are you returning your car to Barcelona or are you planning on dropping the car in France? If it is the latter...you will get hit with a substantial one- way drop off fee. (hunderds of dollars, likely)

Alpillesgal makes an excellent point about the "village type" experience. We like L'Isle sur La Sorgue as a base, because it is right on the edge of the Luberon. L'Isle sur la Sorgue is fairly large for a provencal town, but we stay about 3 miles outside the town in a gite in a lovely farm setting, so it works just fine for us. L'Isle is about 20 miles east of Avignon.

Avignon is however a nive base if you like larger city. Howeve I think you should consider the location of your accommodation and prefer the accomodation in the old city. But then you might have the parking problem.

There are plenty of village to choose from nearby avignon where you might enjoy a more "provence feeling" in the way of pace of life.
