River /lake beaches Avignon

We are staying near Avignon this summer; we will be doing lots of sightseeing but are also looking forward to lazing around in the sunshine too. Can anyone recommend some good river or lake beaches within an hour or so's travel? Thanks.

The river by the pont du Gard has a bit of beach by it, and of course you get the pont du Gard as well. Why not do the thing properly, and go down to the Camargue and visit Aigues Mortes, which is by the sea.

You could go to Stes-Maries-de-la-Mer, which is also in the Camargue but, unlike Aigues-Mortes, is a seaside resort with a beach.

Saint Maries is the closest good ocean beach.

My first thought was also Pont du Gard. You can paddle, swim or kayak under the pont, picnic on the rocks and take in that amazing view.

There are not so many rivers around Avignon where you can sunbath...

Pont du Gard or Collias is one the best idea. Get a canoe and stop at the spot you fancy the best.... I love doing that.

You can also canoe from Fontaine de Vaucluse (less spot to stop).

In Isle sur la Sorgue, there is a park when you can bath by the river and also swim in it.

There is a little lake north of Avignon nr pernes but it's mostly for the campers nearby ans sort of cute but not the best....

Thanks for all the helpful tips - we love the canoe idea so that's definitely on the holiday 'to do' list. We are going to the coast for a few days after so won't try there during our Avignon stay - we've heard that the traffic and parking along the coast is very difficult in the summer months and not very relaxing. Looking forward to visiting such a beautiful area.

Indeed you are correct. Pending on the time of year and the area you choose traffic can prove to be a nightmare in summer.....
