Day trip from Avignon

Hi

We have one day (Friday) spare in Avignon and would like to go on our own (by bus or train) to a nice little town, easy walking to see the sights (we like history/cobble streets/little restaurants). Thinking Aix en Provence, Aries, Nimes or Uzes, but would love any other suggestions and advice on which would be the best, or if we can incorporate two places in one day that would also be great.

(We have booked a tour already to Pont du gard/Les Baux de Provence/Gordes and Roussillon).

Thank you so much

I'm planning on our trip next year to take the bus from Avignon to St Remy, have a meander in town, and walk out (a kilometer?) to Glanum, which is an excavation of Roman ruins...

St Remy is underwhelming.

Go to Arles by train...plan on spending the whole day. There is a ton to see and it is a wonderful compact town that is easy to get around in.

NImes is terrific with a wonderful coliseum and a terrific feel....bu there is much more to see in Arles.

Uzes is lovely, but it is quite small....about 7,000 people.

Aix would be on the bottom of your list.

Hi

Thank you so much, have just read the description of St. Remy on the link you sent, sounds perfect.

Unless you go on a Wednesday for the market in St Remy, it is an underwhelming place. And having actually been to all of the destinations on your list many, many times (instead of planning to go), if you have only ONE day, I would stack your list up this way in terms of best to worst:

Arles

NImes

Uzes

Aix

St Remy

Have to agree with Datthecoast here, Aix and St Remy are charming places to see, but not worth a whole day unless you are going on market day. Arles has so much more to offer. You should combine Nimes with your Pont du Gard tour.

Wish we could see Nimes when we go to Pont du Gard, but it is an organised tour and not included.

Actually I would go for Uzes if it is a market day. A charming town with French history in its chateau (which you can tour), a lovely cathedral, antiques in shops and markets, a fabulous market in a very pretty "square" which is a round surrounded by the streets and the arcades inside. A great place to spend a day.

I absolutely love Aix and am surprised to see the above.

we stayed there for a few days and enjoyed the atmosphere and the nightlife, the charming cobblestone streets, squares and outdoor restaurants cafes and pubs. Fountains everywhere and great for strolling and people-watching.

Thank you all so much, I have had a good look at all the places suggested, honestly can't decide, everywhere looks beautiful, will just have to throw a dice this time and make sure we go back one day to visit the places we missed.
