Plus, IME, in high season it's full of busloads of tourists during the day, but half-dead at night.

Gordes is a wonderful base. The village is on tour bus route for a good reason. It is truly striking. It is also just about the best in terms of its central location for exploring the Luberon. Uzes is a lovely small town. A bit "out of the way" but certainly doable in terms of day trips within the region and very charming. If you really want somewhere between Avignon and Aix, well then take a look at Lourmarin.

Lourmarin is the ideal base -- for us, at least. Its particular advantage is quick access by car (via a short though somewhat "interesting" drive across the Combe Lourmarin) to the northern side of the Luberon, & from there to Vaison, the Drome, the southern Rhone, etc. So it's an ideally located, central spot for touring anywhere in Provence, as long as you have a car. Oh, & the village itself is charming & lively.

Lourmarin is indeed a lovely spot with some terrific villages around it, like Cucuron. But, it is much to far east to be considered a "central" base for exploring Provence. Really, everything that you want to explore is west of you and while driving the "Combe de Lourmarin" is interesting one or two times. Having to do it every day would drive most people crazy.

Something close to the Western edge of the the Luberon will give you access to explore both the Luberon and more of Western Provence. Just to get from Lourmarin to the Western edge of the Luberon is at least an hour drive..
