Cote d'Azur end May/start June - first trip!

Hello,

We are starting to plan our first trip to the French Riviera. We are there for a week at the end May/start June and staying at the Hotel Jabotte in Antibes. We would really appreciate any tips or comments or advice.

In Antibes we plan to

• Wander about old town

• See the markets

• Visit Picasso Museum, Chateau Grimaldi

• Try the Absinthe at the Bar La Balade (25 Cours Masséna)

• Have lunch at the historic Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc

(Worth the price? Which restaurant should we go to - I believe there are 2?)

We also plan to make day trips to really experience the Cote d'Azur:

Cannes

Iles de Lerins from Cannes – and take a picnic

St Tropez - I believe there is a boat from Juan-les-Pins?

St Paul de Vence

Train to Monaco - is it worth it? Heard conflicting reports

Villefranche?

Grasse?

Oh - and we're on a pretty tight budget!

Appreciate all suggestions and advice.

You have planned out a near-perfect itinerary. Small detail - the ferry to St Tropez is from St Raphael (not JLP) get there by train from Antibes and walk to the Port for the Bateaux St Raphael

Yes Monaco is worth seeing - it reminds of the saying (originally regarding Mt Fuji) "only two kind of fool - those who never been there and those who been more than once". In my book Monaco is a must see (if only once)

Villefranche allows you to take in a walk onto Cap Ferrat and the marvelous Villa Ephrussi. Another must-do.

As regards Grasse, it would be on my list of priorities, but somewhere near the bottom - or lower.

cannes- bus [1 euro] or train

boat trip JLP to st tropez usually starts from 1st june but only certain days of the week. You can also usually take the boat to ste Marguerite via JLP in summer with same company

st paul de vence either by bus to train to cagnes sur mer then bus 400 to st paul

Valbonne and Biot villages are easy to get to from Antibes

Thansk so much NiceLife and selkieNice, great to get your comments.

On your advice NiceLife we have taken Grasse off our itinerary. We were not aware of Villa Ephrussi but it looks spectacular and definitely requires a visit!

selkieNice, would you advise visiting the villages you mention as an alternative to St Paul de Vence? Is St Paul's more difficult to get to from Antibes?

Would either of you have any opinion on the best of the 2 restaraunts at Hotel du Cap Eden Roc. As a Fitzgerald fan I have to experience it!

Thanks again.

Well, I like Grasse! We have friends who live nearby and so have perhaps been better able to spend time in the town and appreciate what it has to offer--even in December. For starters, there's the fine Provençal museum, a good shopping section in the old town, the Fragonard perfumery (with nice gift shop), and the newish International Museum of Perfume. There are a number of good restaurants, of which we liked est Lou Candaloun best: delicious food at very reasonable prices in a prettily decorated place near the town center.

There's also a beautiful rose garden on top of the main parking garage.

St paul means taking a bus or train to cagnes sur mer then another bus but its not particularly difficult

Valbonne village and Biot village just involve taking a direct bus - timetables and route planner here.

St paul is much more touristy than either Valbonne or Biot

All 3 villages are interesting and worthwhile to visit ,
