Driving through Monaco

I read somewhere that you are not allowed to drive through Monaco. Possibly this was a certain part of it. However, if it is possible is there any particular route that one can take. We just want to drive through on our way to see what it is like there. Merci

Although I am a regular visitor I have never bothered to find out the difference between Monaco and Monte Carlo but I suspect that Monaco is the small area on top of the hill around the palace and it would make sense that only official cars can drive there. I often drive and cycle through Monte Carlo without difficulty, although traffic can be busy.

Monte Carlo has more police per person than anywhere else in the world and it is possibly for this reason that the crazy driving that is normal in Nice does not happen in Monte.

Take the coast road, the N98, from Menton to Nice, or reverse, and you will go through Monte Carlo.

If you mean the old town of Monaco - yes, you can't drive there, but it is nothing unusual in Europe. Mostly the old town centers are pedestrian-only, with cars access restricted to those who live there, to delivery and services (garbage disposal etc.). Monaco is no exception. In Germany it is the case in most cities and towns as well.

As far as I remember I saw a sign on my way back to Nice by bus which says that only cars from Monaco and the South of France are allowed to enter Monaco. This was 2 years ago, but last year I noticed some cars from Germany, Switzerland and Italy. So for me it´s still an unanswered question.

LondonBob, the principality is called Monaco, Monte-Carlo is the name of the quarter around the casino.

Bill2005, Thanks for clarifying that. We will be in Villefranche this week. Provided the weather is reasonable I will be cycling through Monaco at some point and will check what it says on the signs.

Like LondonBob says, it is not obvious to drive on The Rock close to the Prince's quarters. But in Monte-carlo itself there is no problem apart from being slowed down by construction or getting onto streets where traffic is diverted because of new constructions. You get around faster walking unless you want to go in sopecific sites like the Exotic Gardens for instance.

Found this site (in French)

…gouv.fr/fr/…transports_29604.html

So the restrictions I mentioned are only valid for Monaco-Ville, the area between the Palace and the sea. There´re some road closures because of the Formula 1 Grand Prix at the end of May
