Ventimiglia Side Trip/ French Hillside town suggestions

We will be staying in the hills above Cannes ( Vallauris) for 4 days in mid-June & will have a car. Is it worth a car or train visit to Ventimiglia, Italy for a few hours?

Also , any suggestions on hillside ( as opposed to coastal) beautiful villages that are not too far of a drive from Vallauris? Any suggested things to do & great places to dine.

Thanks so very much.

Ventimiglia is principally a cross-border shopping town, with an excellent market on Fridays - mainly clothing and fashion goods. If this interests you, its a great day out, and there are some good inexpensive restaurants along the sea front. Personally I would take the train from Cannes direct to Ventimiglia, as there are great views from the train window, and its fairly fast. Driving is bad news, especially for the driver.

Not far from Vallauris you have the old original town of Valbonne, which has a lovely central square good for lunch, and Le Cannet old town Rue St Saviour likewise, stunning setting. Then you have the usual tourist favourites of St Paul de Vence, and the less crowded Tourette sur Loup

I agree with NiceLife, if you like shopping the market at Ventimiglia is quite a sight, but get the train don't drive.

I would hugely recommend Tourrettes-sur-Loup (http://www.tourrettessurloup.com), which is a perched village with pretty cobbled streets and a open square. It has an artistic reputation and has the best ice cream locally at Tom's! St-Paul is nice if you hit it early and out of season but unbearably crowded if not. Vence is lovely, too.

The other places I would recommend are Gourdon and Eze, but both a very touristy but with stunning views.

The old part of Ventimiiglia (the 'città alta'), with its cathedral, is a hill town set high above the sea on the other side of the river from the main commercial centre.

If you drive to Ventimiglia and are interested in hill towns, you can also drive just a little further to see such villages as Apricale and Dolceacqua, which while having a tourist infrastructure, are less touristy than most locations in France within a comparable distance of the coast.

For a particularly spectacular location, drive to Baiardo - situated 3000 ft up and with extensive views of the Alps and Mediterranean. But be warned that though the distance may look short on a map, the road there from Apricale is narrow, twisting and slow.

I would suggest Tourettes-sur-Loup, Vence and Biot. St. Paul de Vence and Eze are nice but very crowded in summer. Go early. If you want to go to Ventimiglia take the train. It's better than driving in summer. And don't rent a big car. Stick with an automatic compact car. Many streets and country roads are narrow and parking garages often narrow, too. In March we rented an SUV (a forced upgrade) which was very difficult and a compact car which was great. Having an automatic is a lot more easier and far more enjoyable on the French Riviera.

The perched village of Biot is charming, but down below is a well known glass-blowing studio that one can visit. The restaurant opposite, La Verrerrie, is very good and a local favorite.

Is the glass studio & restaurant a walk down from the village of Biot? Do you know if the restaurant serves lunch?

Thanks

Yes: the glassworks is down the hill from Biot, just off the road leading up to the village. The restaurant does serve lunch, and it's usually packed; so go around 11:30 or reserve a table for later.
