Renting a car a good idea?

I am looking to do the below trip. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the trip from Nice on, would be preferable with a rental car? There will be 4 of us. 1 of us drives a stick for our everyday car so that won’t be a problem. We are liking the flexibility a car will provide, along with the fun of the mini road trip it offers….but understand parking is not always ideal and these roads aren’t the open roads of America. Thoughts?

-Amsterdam (3 nights)

-Paris (4 nights)

-Nice (2 nights)

-Italian Riveria - Santa Margerita, Portofino, Camogli, Genoa, San Fruttuoso, Rapallo, & the 5 villages of Cinque Terre (4/5 nights)

-Tuscany/Florence/Parma/Lucca area (3/4 nights)

Renting a car in France and dropping it off in Italy is expensive, typically €500 or more more than picking a car up over the border, e.g. in San Remo, Alassio or Savona.

Cars are useless in the Cinque Terre, with very poor roads and limited parking, and can be a problem in Florence because of the ZTL (limited traffic zone). If intending to travel in August, traffic and parking are a problem in much of the Italian Riviera.

However, you are intending to cover a lot of ground (too much?), and if you are car people then maybe the flexibility is more important to you than the inconveniences.

Check out renting a car in Ventimiglia (just over the French/Italian border). You might be able to drop it off in Florence. I'm like you, love to have a car for my touring. I had GPS on my lease car in June which was essential for me in Genoa to find the hotel I had booked in the old town

To rent a car in Italy and avoid cross border charges, you have to venture further than Ventimiglia, but as Perilizia mentioned in post #1 San Remo, Alasso, Savona have car rental outlets
