Why not both? We're doing two nights in Monterosso, Cinque Terre and then three in Nice. Will probably not do it justice but enough for a taste. When you're coming from the West Coast like we are, you've got to make the most of your time!

You can't do Provence AND the Cinque Terre. Provence is an area that covers the whole southeast of France!

Cinque Terre is pretty. We've been there for a week which we found to be too long. You can easily see the 5 villages in 2 days. By the way, you will get the best views from the sea. There are boats running between the villages. If you have a car, leave it at the hotel (or outside the village you are staying at) and take the train/boat to see the villages.

Now for Provence, as said above, it's a vast area. There's much more to see than in the C.T. Pretty towns like Mougins, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Vence, Grasse, ... but also beautiful nature, for instance the Gorges du Verdon or the Parque National du Mercantour, to name a few.

I think you know by now what my choice would be, don't you? We just got back from the area, by the way.

Make sure to spend at least a day in Nice. The old town is pretty, though very touristy. Don't be disappointed by the beaches. They're rocky, no fine sandy beaches in Nice.

What time of the year are you planning on?

My initial thought was that you might like to spend the week exploring Nice and the area - Cannes, St Paul de Vence, Monacco, St Tropez etc. But if you are planning the visit for late July or August the area will be swamped with tourists!
