ligue 1 football

We will be in Nice in May (2 weeks). My husband is a big football (American Soccer) fan. I would love to be able to take him to a professional game. I know there are teams in Nice, Monaco, Marseille etc. Any suggestions on the best way to find out when games are being played at home and how to get tickets? Any suggestions on which stadiums may be the easiest to get to from the major tourist areas?

Thanks

Try here

and here

Monaco are doing better then Nice at the moment and are the more "glamourous" club

I'd stick to the 2 local teams if I were you, marseille might be a bit of a trek

Thanks...I had found those sites earlier but with my limited french was having trouble telling which were home games and which were away games. Also....is it advisable to buy tickets ahead of time or can you purchase at the time of the game at the stadium?

If you look in the corner of the AS Monaco webpage, there is a little Union Jack flag - click on that and it will come up in English.

re home games, the convention is that the home team's name comes first, so if it says Monaco v St.Etienne, that game will be played in Monaco; if it says St.Etienne v Monaco, that game will be played in St.Etienne.

I don't believe Monaco sell out their home games too often (don't know about Nice), but as it's nearing the end of the season in May, if either side is still in contention for anything (relegation or a place in the Europa League) then tickets might be harder to come by. You have a little while to wait and see, however.

Thanks so much...there does appear to be a game while we are there. We would likely take the bus 100 from Nice to Monaco. Would we be best to catch a taxi to the stadium or is there a better way? Is it fairly easy to find or close to the casino/old town?

To get to the Monaco stadium (Stade Louis II), get out at the bus stop just after the 100 bus crosses the border - I think it's called "Cimetiere" (cemetery). It's 3 stops before the Casino. Once off the bus, start walking towards the centre of Monaco, and after about 20 yards, there's a set of steps on your right. Go down the steps, cross the road at the bottom, turn right and follow the road round. The stadium is directly in front of you about 200 yards away. It'll take a couple of minutes to walk from the bus stop to the stadium.

to buy in advance try ticketnet.fr -can be collected in Nice i.e. Virgin on Jean Medecin

Neither Nice or Monaco have domestic sell outs ;in terms of games in May the most attractive looks like Nice v Bordeaux Wed 5th because Bordeaux are currently league leaders

the other Nice Monaco fixtures do not look so crucial but you never know

to see the fixtures and tables go to www.bbc.co.uk --sport--football-Europe--French results -tables / fixtures

Thanks so much for the help. It looks like we will try for the Monaco vs. AS Nancy match on the 8th (the bordeaux game on the 5th is just a day too soon!). My husband will be thrilled with any games as, sadly, we do not have professional football/soccer in Canada. Seeing a game in Monaco will be a definate plus!!!

monacocabbie...thanks so much for the detailed directions. That helps a lot!

Can't wait for to feel the Riviera sun again....(it's -20 C degrees here today)

Confused....was just on the AS Monaco FC website on the schedule page and have noticed that the May 5 and May 8th matches have changed and are no longer listed as home games. In fact, the May 8th game no longer lists Monaco at all. It lists AJ Auxerre vs AS Nancy.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

I guess I will just have to keep an eye on the schedule prior to our trip. We are so hoping to be able to get to a match.

Not sure what page you're looking at, but on the official AS Monaco website:

5th May FC Lorient - AS Monaco FC - away match

8th May AS Monaco FC - AS Nancy L - home match
