Monaco, Nice and wineries

I'm flying to Nice in March, renting a car and then going to Monaco. We've been advised to skip Italy but would like to explore the areas surrounding Nice. Any suggestions for hotels/bed and breakfasts, and wineries? Favorite restaurants or local spots?

Arrive in Nice, skip Italy, rent a car to get from Nice to Monaco - where are you getting your advice from?

First, ditch the car. You don't need it to explore anything here - most visitors use the pretty good bus and train services around the Riviera which are cheap and mostly fun, adding to the pleasure of "exploring" the Riviera for real, as opposed to driving around looking at the bumper of the car in front and somewhere to park.

To explore: in no particular order: Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, Nice itself, Villefranche and Cap Ferrat, Eze Village, Vence and St Paul, Grasse, Haut de Cagnes, Isle des Lerins, Menton - that should be enought to get you started.

Favourite places? Too many to even start. Hotel suggestions : your budget is where, between eu50 and eu400 a night?

Wineries? Go into a Bar/Cave anywhere in Nice - La Part des Anges or Cave Wilson is a good start - and work your way through the winelist, a glass at a time. And you can enjoy, as you won't be driving.

Thank you! I had heard to skip Italy but appreciate the advice on the car. Hotel budget in the 100 euro range? But happy to do a few nights cheap and splurge a night or two if there is something worthwhile or a nice bed and breakfast?

Both on rue Gubernatis, but if you google the names with the word Nice, you'll find them.
