Sorry to hear this, selkie, always sad to hear that an institution is going... often dropped in there . On the subject of English bookshops Heidi's in Antibes ( bigger than the Cat's Whiskers) is still going strong - I was at their 20th birthday celebrations some months ago. Not sure how old the Cat is?

I have the Cats Whiskers to thank for one of my favourite book titles, PJ O'Rourke's "Age and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence, and a Bad Haircut". As a motto, it's stood me in good stead.

I am amazed there are any shops left. If a postman can carry it, Amazon and Ebay between them meet 99% of all needs. (Though possibly not Ebay.fr - I expect they are "en greve")

Often yes, Selkie, "Play" shipping from Guernsey can be very competitive, I have often used them for pre-order items. However Amazon Marketplace vendors for second hand items can often turn up bargains on back-catalogue. However Ebay on a good day is hard to beat, (provided there are no other bidders!)

playtrade second hand items generally beat amazon market place due to the excessive postage costs to france with amazon marketplace - but amazon france can beat both , on occasion, for english books =so its worth doing price comparisons

Touche!

Unfortunately I have no confidence in the French Postal System's ability to deliver anything of value to my french "Boite de lettres", amidst the junk mail for Pizza delivery, doubtful plumbers, Carrefour, and amazing mystic Amadou leaflets.

For excitement try postage SAL from Japan, if you like suspense. Will it arrive? Won't it?

This is very sad, especially after losing the even longer-established Monaco bookshop a couple of years ago.

Another online site with free delivery is http://www.bookdepository.co.uk which therefore often works out cheaper for me for new books than Amazon uk (there is no Amazon Italy) even though their book prices are often more expensive. Deliveries so far have also been by conventional post, unlike Amazon's which are sometimes by private carrier which can create considerable problems if you have an address which is hard to find.

I've bought quite a few things from http://www.bookdepository.co.uk ..they don't always have what i'm looking for but have been good value and relaiable for the stuff i've bought. They sell through play as well as direct
