nice or antibes

We'll be driving to Nice from Barcelona in april and I'm wondering which is a better place to stay for a couple days before heading back to Barcelona? We'd really like to see monte carlo but have no other plans.

stay in Nice and you will have plenty to do for a couple of days

everyone wants to say they have been to Monaco / Monte Carlo so drive or take the train or bus- you can probably "do" the hotspots i.e. palace, casino ,race track route in a half day

Nice is a city - not nearly as big as Barcelona, but still a city. Antibes is a small town - relaxed and walkable and with traditional buildings in a charming OldTown, a famous Provencal Market, Picasso Museum and around 50 good restaurants. A superb view of the snow clad Alps ( as youre coming in April) from the Ramparts that surround the town ( not to be seen from Nice, as that city lies under the mountains). Nice would be a slightly better transport hub but only slightly - the same train line goes through Antibes and will get you to Monaco in less than an hour. Also Cannes within 15 minutes, Nice in 25 minutes. Other excusrsions - St Paul de Vence, Eze and Villefranche.

I'd go for Nice; Antibes is nice enough but Nice is a wonderful place to wander and explore. Plus, you're very well placed to get to Monaco by public transport (bus 100 or 100 xpress on the Lignes d'Azur).

Unless you already have an en-route itinerary , it's a fairly long round trip from Barcelona if your only real plan is to visit Monte Carlo...

which as mentioned above can be covered in half a day.

It's all down to personal preference and depends on what you like to do with your time, but before opting for Nice or Antibes, suggest you read up about the Riviera and identify what you might enjoy most to ensure best use of a fairly short time.

If you have a car and fancy a complete contrast to Barcelona , you might also consider staying in one of the smaller villages - there are several possibilities all of which would give access to Monte Carlo and more in your time frame

Driving and parking should't be too bad in April unless your visit coincides with a bank holiday, but do consider using public transport for visiting places on the coast

Whatever you decide - enjoy

I would go for Nice. Antibes is nice, but also very touristic and british. In Nice there is a much wider choice of anything, especially restaurants.
