Fortunately getting around the Côte d'Azur by train and bus is both easy and inexpensive. You can travel to anywhere along the coast between St-Raphael and Menton, even into Italy, by train. Many of the towns and villages a short distance inland such as St-Paul, Vence, Èze and so on can be reached easily by bus.

I would say you have no chance of getting a hired car without a credit card. If that is an issue, rely on public transport which as IrishRovr pointed out, is more than excellent.

I imagine they would let you hire the car if you put down its full value in cash by way of deposit. Is that what you had in mind?

You would be better advised to get around on public transport, which is cheap'n'cheerful here. That is of course unless you suffer some kind of affliction that makes car rental absolutely an essential. Such as being an American (only kidding!)

Bus and train will get you everywhere. Then you can treat yourself to a couple of bottles of good champagne with what you save.

Thanks for the reply.

I am a non drinker so the champers is a no go BUT l would like a car because its my wifes first time and l want to take her to the places l know, Antibes, Villefranche, Juan le Pins, Cap Ferrat and Monacco, even maybe a day to Cannes or St Tropez.

In your opinion are these places easy to get to by public transport ?

I am just so used to having a car you see......

The only place on yoru list that is awkward to get to by public transport is st tropez - and st tropez can be awkard [nightmarish] to get to even by car if traffic is bad

train to antibes, juan les pins , cannes

Villefranche and monaco by bus or train

cap ferrat by bus

As Selkie says, bus and train is the way to go. This is not a casual opinion - I have been travelling around the Cote d'Azur from Nice for nine years now, and I wouldn't touch car rental with a bargepole, complete waste of money.

Shame about the non-drinking, though. You know, its not too late to change? Champagne has a lot to offer...gives you a whole new perspective on things.

I am going to give the public transport a go thanks to yours and Selkie's advice.

I am to set in my ways getting a car everywhere l go, now may be a good time to change.

Thank you both very much....

I agree with NiceLife that public transport is so good that you don't really need to consider using a car.

However, for those of us who want to enjoy driving for driving's sake, before it is legislated/taxed off the planet, there are some spectacular trips you can do. Outside the peak holiday times in July and August, and avoiding the morning and evening traffic in Nice, car driving can be a pleasure on the Cote d'Azur.

For example, any car enthusiast should, at least once before he or she dies, drive the Grande and Moyenne Corniches between Nice and Monaco, if possible in the early morning. The Gorge de Verdun is a must, with Gorge du Loup a worthy alternative. It's also nice to drive the Basse Corniche via Villefranche/Eze sur mer, stopping at Villa Eprussi Rothschild for lunch, and then parking in Monaco for a glass of wine in the Cafe de Paris while you watch the supercars arriving at the Casino.

OK, very non-PC, the Greens hate me for this, who do I think I am, Jeremy Clarkson? I don't want to get into that whole debate, but if you like driving, go for it!
