Antibes or Villefranche-Sur-Mer as home base

We're a family (adults, teens) planning to visit the Cote d'Azur for about a week in July. We're looking for recommendations about whether to make our home base in Antibes or Villefranche-sur-Mer. Both look charming; we thought there might be more to see in Antibes, its cultural history interests us, and the write-ups of the old town make it sound appealing indeed. But we wondered whether the old town is lost in the hustle of a more modern surrounding city? Villefranche seems charming too but we wondered whether the sights and activities there are more limited (or not!). We do expect to take the train from either town on excursions to Nice, Monaco, etc. We would love advice from folks who know these towns -- thanks so much!

Sights and activities in Villefranche are very limited but it is closer to Monaco and Nice than Antibes if you want to visit these two cities.

I think your teens could go stir crazy there after a few days.

Antibes offers much more variety and far more going on. The old town is a separate entity, but it does border more modern parts. Choose your base accommodation in the old town carefully to minimise the new if you prefer to avoid it

We looked at both when considering buying property and decided on Villefranche mainly because of its spectacular location and the ease of travel to Nice. There is more to do in Antibes but it is not such an easy journey to Nice, which is by far the most lively place on the coast.

I will agree that Villefranche is the most beautiful place on the Riviera .

The negatives would be (a) it is quite small and might pall after a day or two (b) while you don't say if you wish to stay in a hotel or apartment you will find shopping opportunities very limited in Villefranche while Antibes has plenty of supermarkets etc within walking distance (c) eating opportunities in Villefranche are somewhat limited too to a number of quite expensive but scenically located restauarants around the port. Antibes has over 50 on the Old Town alone catering for all budgets. Not so good a view though1

Most of residential 'new' Antibes is north of the railway line if you can access a map. The main disadvantage of the Old Town is probably noise - things go on till 2 am or later in the summer.

Antibes is better for the beach and for the marineland park. The old city is very nice with a lot of restaurants.
