Jean Cocteau

Is there some kind of upcoming performance in Nice related to the work of Jean Cocteau. I recall seeing some kind of reference to such, but now am at a loss to track this down.

Thanks. We plan to take a day trip to Menton when we are in Nice just after Christmas. My wife has been reading a biography of Cocteau - his multi-faceted creativity and debauchery. We visited Menton and the museum a few years ago and ate lunch right at the beach. Took forever to get our pizza and salad - they carried the food over from across the street - but we no agenda except to sip our wine and drink in the sun.

If you happen to be in Paris the town of Milly-la-Forêt outside of Paris is where Cocteau lived and his house has been turned into a museum. He is buried in the small chapel there that he also decorated, called La Chapelle Saint-Blaise les Simples.

It may be too far from Menton and Nice for you to drop by on a whim, but Jean Cocteau's last chapel, Notre-Dame de Jerusalem in Fréjus is another magical place to visit.

It's especially so because, outside of mid-summer or the occasional school visits, you have a chance to enjoy it all to yourself or at least without the following of a crowd. It is not in the old town of Fréjus but to the outskirts, bordering the Estérel mountains so you'll need a car for easy access.

Fréjus organized a number of talks in September & October, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the artist's passing, as I'm sure Menton and Nice have done as well.

If you want to experience the Fréjus chapel vicariously, I wrote a short piece about it some time ago: azuralive.com/2012/…A9jus-france.html

Enjoy!

Since your last visit to Menton, there is a wonderful new Cocteau museum that has opened very near the original one. And don't miss the marriage room in the Mairie nearby. Or, if you have time to break your journey in Villefranche, the fishermen's chapel there. Cocteau left his mark on many places along the coast here.

Some restaurants take forever to serve a meal but others are quite a bit slower than that!
