Nice with kids for a few days.....worth it?

Hoping to do a city break during Easter hols.....been a while since we did a european city. Looking at some of the new Ryanair destinations from our local airport (15mins) and getting some great fares to Nice. I've been once many moons ago Inter-railing....cant remember much...think we prob just slept all day and socialised all night!!! Now that am old and sensible with 2 boys (12 & 7) wondering if Nice worth a trip for 4/5 days or so?.....Not be heading for the beaches....more of an experience a european city type thing with the boys....last few trips been stateside so like to expose them to some european culture.....any help greatly appreciated!

Well you're posting in a Nice forum so bound to get biased responses ---but yes so worth it!! nice is a great city You can explore the old town and the hill and promenade. And also well situated for tons of day trips.

While Nice is an interesting city, it is not really a place that i would consider as a "Destination," especially for a few days with kids ( two boys 12 & 7 ). If you want to expose them to both the beauty and history of Provence, you may want to consider basing yourselves in Arles, Avignon, or Nimes

Nice is a fabulous small and walkable city , with lots of things to do and see as well as the setting on a bay, with natural parks, Roman and mediaeval remains, mediaeval old town , old port area, great architecture etc etc:

Additionally there are many perched villages close by easily visited by public transport as well as Monaco, Antibes Cannes etc

There are also scenic train and bus routes into the mountains

Public transport is cheap and easy

There is plenty to keep you and your kids occupied for years, never ,mind a few days.

I will second the above for Nice. All the places mentioned by selkie are but minutes from each other - Monaco is 20 minutes on the trains which run 2 or 3 times an hour. There are plenty of cultural things too - museums and galleries - and e.g. the splendid Oceanographic Museum at Monaco.

Provence (a la Avignon etc) will take at least a 3 hour chunk out of your 'few days' each way and may possibly be overkill in the cultural sense for the boys. Hiring a car is almost certainly essential there too unlike the Nice area.

Are Ryanair flying out of Shannon to Nice now?
