Nice to St. Tropez

We are spending 8 nights in Nice in early September. We are considering a day trip to St. Tropez and were wondering what is the best way to get there (ruling out helicopters) and is it worth the time it takes to get there and back?

The most pleasant way of doing this is the mini cruise by Trans Cote d'Azur (shipping line) - see their website for schedule and rates ( but around 60 euro). The voyage takes one and a half hours each way - you spend about 5 hours in St Tropez and then return.

You can also take the train ( about one hour travel time each way and there is one an hour ) to St Raphael and the much shorter ferry ride from there across the bay to St Trop. The train route along the Esterel coast is extremely scenic and of a very different nature to other parts of the Riviera.

Thank you Ed. My understanding was that the boat ride was about 2 and a half hours each way. Is this wrong??

St Trop is another of these places that people either love or hate. We've done it twice - by car the first time and the second time we went by boat from Nice. 9am start from Nice, arrive 11.30 St Trop, after calling in Cannes and Saint Marguerite to pick up and drop off. The boat leaves St Tropez at 4.30 and gets back to Nice for 7pm.

It was very enjoyable because of the sights along the coastline and informative commentary. Foe me, the best part of St Tropez was walking to the old part of the village and to the citadel, away from the crowds and the glitz, underneath the surface, I found something different!

The best part of St. Tropez is the rest of the peninsula.
