How hot it is in June and July, do we need air conditioner

Hello,

We are planning our first trip to Luberon area (Provence). I have contacted a few Bed and Breakfasts. Some of them do not have air conditoning in rooms. Is air conditioner really a must there. We will be staying near Roussillon. How hot is it in late June early July especially at night.

Thanks

We were in the Luberon late one June when the weather was very pleasant. One can't draw conclusions from that, though, as Diz indicates. Last year we were further south in Languedoc-Roussillon when it got quite hot during the day, but cooled at night. I think if your lodging has fans for the bedrooms, you should be fine at that time of year.

Like texhills, I think that you will be fine with fans in the bedrooms at night in late June and early July.

Why? Primarily because the local architecture, as Diz said, is designed to :

A Keep the houses cooler, even during the hottest part of the year

(from early August through the beginning of September )

B. Keep the houses warmer during Late Fall and Winter (when

the region has to deal with sustained, super-cold winds , the Mistral, that comes out of the North), and can blow for many days.

A/C is not essential.

Even during heatwaves we just open our shutters and turn the fan up a setting.

A/C is not common for older buildings in Provence so if you feel it is something you just cannot live without pick a modern hotel or B&B which is more likely to have it.

I'd agree that you don't really need air conditioning. You may find that you want to do as the locals do and spend the heat of the day in the shade or having a siesta. If you have the option of a pool though, you might be glad of that.
