Looking for small coastal town for two days near Marseilles

We are flying into Marseilles in mid September and want to relax on the coast for a couple days before beginning our trip through Provence and beyond. We prefer small town to cities so we really aren't planning to go into Marseilles unless someone convinces me there is a good reason, ie. a must-see. We love world cuisines and good wine and people of all sorts. We would like a special place overlooking the Med, medium price range.

While we do not base ourselves in Cassis, we enjoy at lease one meal at Restaurant Romano, during our month-long stay "en Provence," every September.

Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer is a lovely little spot....relatively undiscovered.

Cassis is the most popular small town near Marseille (it can also get extremely crowded, though you'll be there outside the main season). For food and wine buffs, it's ideal with some excellent, mainly white wines http://bit.ly/1gYNojS and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the Villa Madie. http://bit.ly/Lj8q29

Try to catch the week-long Vendanges Etoilées, the town's annual gastronomic / wine festival with demos / meals by Michelin-starred chefs. I don't think the 2014 dates are known yet but it's usually around 20-30 Sept. http://www.les-vendanges-etoilees.com/

I know I know, but have a look at La Ciotat for the restaurants. Many of them have been reviewed here at TA. A bit more rugged place. I second St Cyr / Les Lecques as a nice spot. Cassis is the classic, but at the same time inflated by huge tourism. The drive over Route des Cretes over the coastal hills between Cassis and La Ciotat should add some to your trip.

If so many people go to and love Cassis, there is a good reason!
