What part of town should we stay?

We're starting a two week vacation in Marseille in mid-May. Where should we look for accommodations? Thanks

The airport is about halfway between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence so depending on what your interests are, you could stay in either one of those. There is a bus every 30 minutes, taking about 30 minutes, that goes into Aix, for example.

Around the Vieux Port is putss you within walking distance of many places to visit, along the la Corniche to have a sea view. Le Prado to not be so central. Look for subway stops for easy access.

Thanks much. We're renting a Villa a little north of Aix so I'm sure we'll be there a few days later in the trip. Do you have a favorite hotel in Marseille?

Sorry, we don't, but will get this question back up to the top for others to see (or you can query "favorite hotel in Marseille").

May I join in JIMO756's original question? My husband I will also are considering being in Marseille in mid-May for a couple of days. Though we've been to France many times and Provence several, we've never been to Marseille so our plan is to be total tourists for those days. We understand that this is one city where you don't go wandering around for the fun of getting lost. So where is the best place to stay? We aren't budget travelers but not super rich either.

The best hotels close to the Vieux Port are the Sofitel Vieux Port, and the Intercontinental Hotel Dieu. The Intercontinental opened last year, and has a nice view on Notre Dame de La Garde, the must visit Basilica of Marseille. It is a historic building built at the XVIII century. The Sofitel has a nice view over the port, and its restaurant is famous and has an amazing view.

You also have cheaper ones close to the subway with nice views. Just google "hotel vieux port marseille"

Don t forget to eat the famous Bouillabaisse and drink Pastis !

We stayed at The Grand Hotel Beauvau which was lovely. Excellent views, terrific breakfasts, kinder to the wallet than previous suggestions, for if that matters to you.
