From Port Marseilles to Aix

I know there have been many questions regarding going to Aix Provence from the ship. Is it difficult to get to the station and are the trains reliable? There are four of us. Also is it easy to get around Aix?

Why wouldn't the trains be reliable?

It's a ways....but it is fairly uncomplicated to get from the cruise port to the train station.

The main part of Aix is fairly compact and is easy to explore.

Unlike in Australia, in France trains are a normal method of transport. They are fast, frequent, comfortable and reliable.

I have to differ strongly with the last two posts. In my experience (and I've been based here for 14 years) the regional train service is awful. France has focussed all its resources on the TGV network to the great detriment of local/regional trains, which - here at least - are constantly being delayed or cancelled due to works on the line / strikes / non-availability of rolling stock / accidents / vandalism / acts of God.

At this very moment, SNCF PACA has removed a number of regional trains from its schedule on a range of lines to and from Marseille for a full two months (including the Aix-Marseille line, by the way) -- and has the gall to present this to commuters in promotional leaflets as an "improvement" in the reliability of the service!

Another issue is that regional transport in this area is highly fragmented. A major political reconfiguration over the next year or two is intended to join up the dots, but that won't happen any time soon. In short, take the Aix-Marseille shuttle bus. All the locals do.

Thanks for your honesty, as you say completely different from the other posts. Does the shuttle bus leave from a central bus station and how far is it from the port? We have to be back on board by 4pm.

Many thanks

The bus station is next to - really in the same building as - Saint Charles train station. So you would still have the option of going to Aix by either bus or train. If taking the bus, make sure you get the express bus (Line 50) not the stopping bus (Line 51). If taking the train, take the TER (regional train) not the TGV (high-speed train) as the latter will drop you way out of the centre of Aix.

You'd need to take a taxi from the port to Saint Charles as your time is so limited.
