Is car rental in Marseille for 3days Verdon Gorge tour safe?

Hello all,

We are planning to visit Verdon Gorge in September 26th. We plan to hire a car from Marseille and travel to gorge, and return on 29th. We are calculating that the expense for a car per day will be around 30€ (Rent+GPS). And we ll have to bear the fuel expenses. But we have seen a thread in TA warning against thefts and other hidden expenses. Is this too adventurous a plan? How can we make this work? What all things should be taken care of? Any references for a trustworthy car rental agency?

Thank you.

Can you reserve through AutoEurope in India? Google the place and call/e-mail to ask.

As far as trustworthy.. any well known car rental agency should be/would be reputable, e.g., Avis, Hertz, Europcar (Note- not the same as AutoEurope which is a broker).

Cannot help you with costs and division of same, since this is a personal decision. There will always be incidental expenses, eg, road and local taxes, but these would not be significant or any different than in any other place in the World. Hertz France charges drop-off fee, if you pick up the car in one place and drop it off in another. Again, the fee is not significant.

As far as safety, do not leave anything of value in the rental car, whether exposed or hidden. My rule is that someone will need to stay with the car while other(s) are out touring, taking photos, if luggage is in it.

Otherwise, park your car in a lot with other cars, and enjoy your time. You cannot really do anything more than that. I have not heard anything specifically dangerous about driving around Gorge du Verdon.

I think you may be under estimating the cost as short term car hire in France is expensive.

Use a reputable car hire firm like Hertz or Avis who are clear about all their costs in advance

I always rent from AutoEurope/Kemwel. Look into doing so if you can from India. In addition to the daily rate, there is insurance and tolls and fuel to account for. But at any rate, thousands of people tour the Gorges de Verdon in rental cars every year, and there is no particular danger involved as long as you keep the car locked when you're not in it and your valuables hidden from sight. It's not too adventurous at all. People do it every day. It's a beautiful place.

You can get some pretty fantastic rates if you reserve much in advance and pay online at time of reservation at CITER/National. If you can do in French on CITER is the cheapest.

We agree with the other comments about rental car companies.

To visit the Gorges du Verdon, the best way is to go on foot on the hiking trail which follows the river at the bottom of the gorge. The trip this way will show you the best perspective of the gorge which is truly beautiful. It is so good we have done it twice. If you only go by car you will have a more limited view from above - it's not the same.

The hike takes most of the day - it's 14km - and you want to take water and a flashlight (for passing through a short tunnel) Best arrangement is to stay in the town of La Palud the night before your walk and the night after. This means your drive is not too hectic and you are rested for the hike. (Travel on the roads in the gorge region is slower and takes longer than it looks on the map because the roads are very winding) La Palud is a pretty town in a very beautiful open valley above the gorge - see TA for reviews. The hotel people there can advise on the access to the gorge itself.

On the trip into the region, you can pass through the town of Moustier where they make beautiful faience pottery.

Nice canoe ride or hike on the lower gorge , on the other side of the lake ;"Gorges de Baudinard" or "Basses Gorges du Verdon" in french.Lots of videos on youtube.

Make sure you take the D23 loop road from Lapalud du verdon for awesome views.
