What's a good base city for 2.5 days in Alps w/70-ish lady

I'm going to be travelling to France this summer with my boyfriend and 71-year old (but very active) aunt. We're going to visit Paris and then meander to the mountains.

What would be a good base city with these criteria:

* I will have to get to Geneva by public transport

* boyfriend and aunt need to return to Paris the night before a flight to fly home (can be car or train, but train is probably preferred to avoid driving in Paris)

* desired activities include not-to-strenuous hikes, cable car rides, strolling quaint villages, other activities that one can't find in South Dakota :-)

* she's not that interested in fine dining (good food yes, but this isn't a gastronomic quest), art, cathedrals (seen too many), or shopping

thanks for your help!

It may be nice to look around the Aix les Bains or Chambery area. Here you are in the mountains but not too high up to have the thin air or constant climbing, but very close for trips to these villages. Another very nice place is Annecy, but this is really before the Alps start, although it's close by.

There are good train connections via Lyon to go back to Paris.

You might check out staying in Yvoire for a few days also. It's right on Lake Geneva. You can visit lake towns(Thonon, Evian, Laussane) in both France and Switzerland as well as get to Geneva from there.
