The tap water is better than the bottled !

Also most places serve une carafe d'eau as you sit down

Agreed - most Alpine resorts you've basically got Evian coming out of the tap! Great for washing too!

Make sure you actually get a caraffe too, some restaurants have a sharp practice of giving you a bottle of mineral water even if you asked for a caraffe - check l'addition at the end and fight your corner....

Indeed, the restaurants practically encourage 'carafe deuex' since they all charge ridiculously high prices for bottled water. A glass of wine is typically less than half the price of an evian!

It's out of the tap, so it should be free and you should get as much of it as you want. It used to be you'd get a carafe and some bread brought to the table as soon as you sat down, but more often these days it seems you have to ask for it.
