Where to Go from Chamonix

I will be in Chamonix for a week and have a couple days after that trip to do something else in Europe. Was thinking of flying to another country, but am considering doing a fun road trip if there is one to be had. Can anyone suggest a worthwhile trip, 10 hours and under, for a trip in April. Would prefer not to go to Italy but would if the trip were highly recommended. Thanks!

You could drive as far as Barcelona in under 10 hours but I wouldn't recommend it. A lot depends on what you like (for example, your antipathy to Italy is unusual, so any other preferences would need to be taken into account). Personally, I would explore around lake Geneva and aim to keep the driving at no more than 2-3 hours per day. Have a look at the routeplanner on www.viamichelin.com for indications of where is possible within that timescale (but bear in mind that the high mountain passes will be closed in April) and look at the tourist guide on there and other guidebooks to decide what you want to do.

Bear in mind also that if you hire a car in France you will need to return it to France to avoid hefty cross-border drop-off charges. If you will be flying out of Geneva, that airport has a French and a Swiss side so this will be less of a problem.

Hi,

We recently did a circle drive from Paris to the Loire Valley / The island of Oleron / Biarritz / Bordeaux back to Paris which was very interesting & fun.

You do have heaps of different routes you can take. It does depend on your own interests, your time available, what regions you have already seen & what airport you are departing from ?

You could go from Chamonix to the Loire Valley & stay overnight.

or for example > split your travel up between A-B.

Chamonix to Bordeaux - also Saint Emillion.

Chamonix to Biarritz - also see San Sebastian

Chamonix to Nice ( Cote d 'Azur). See Antibes, Juan les Pins, & Cannes.

Here's a list of day trips in the area -

I'd probably recommend either going around Lac Leman, and them maybe Annecy, or heading for Zermatt and exploring round there. Even if you're not too bothered about going to Italy, the Aosta valley is very beautiful, take the small road and stop in places along the way like Verres.

They will still charge you about a hundred quid if you leave it at the wrong side though, so double check if you do arrange this!

Thanbo, it's usually a good idea to start your own thread if you have a different question, that way more people will see it.

The short answer is that most of the high mountain passes (cols) will be shut but the principal routes through the valleys and the Mont Blanc tunnel will all be open. From your other thread, it appears that you will be driving from Annecy to Chamonix - you should have no problems on this route
