Advice for first winter vacation in region

Hello,

We are planning to spend winter vacation in Chamonix or surrounding area, and we are looking for some advice.

We are family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 kids (girls), 12 and 11 years old.

We are beginner skiers, and we'll want to go to ski one or two days, on beginner slopes, and the rest just visit the surrounding area.

We arrive with plane, from Geneve airport

Please advise on best villages or town to stay in, to be easy reach from Geneve, and also good place to be nearby beginner ski slopes, and a good hub for visits and activities in surroundings.

Thanks for any advice

Pretty much everywhere is within easy reach from Geneva airport. You'd probably be best off staying centrally in Chamonix town centre.

Here's a couple of handy blog posts which address your questions...

From Geneva you have easy access to most resorts in the Haute Savoie. Most would be better for complete beginners than Chamonix, you don't say when you are coming, but early or late season Chamonix would win out on reliable snow cover.

If it is Chamonix I would go for Argentiere as there are nursery slopes at Les Chosolets and a massive area at Le Tour 5 minutes away and most importantly not much walking with kit.

Chamonix is readily accessible by the train 10 minutes or bus 20 minutes.

Hi,

We're in a similar boat. We're a group of two families (5 adults 2 children) also planning to spend a winter season (2014/15) in Chamonix, preferably Argentiere. We were wondering what the best way to source accomodation was? We've been having troubles finding something we like, online!

Thanks,

Brendan

For a beginner ski holiday i would really recommend Grande Terche near St jean D'Aulps in Portes du Soleil. Closer to Geneva airport than Chamonix. We went there last January with our kids, who skied for the first time. great ski school and not crowded at all. Kids loved it and picked it up fast. Also nice: Grande Terche is close to places like Morzine & Les Gets where we had dinner one night. We booked our accommodation in Grande Terche through AlpesLocation.com

You could join chamsocial

http://www.chamsocial.com/

and post a request or just watch out for people advertising accommodation.

For 5 people , I assume you want something relatively spacious and nice, it will not be cheap.
