train from Grenoble

I am looking to take the train from Grenoble to Marseille. The website for booking the train is suggesting a TGV from Valence. How far is this from Grenoble and how would I get there?

I don't know what web site you are using, but it is obviously not the one provided by the actual train operator. If you look on the operator's web site, there is a choice of two routes: a local train to Lyon, changing there to a TGV; or a bus operated by the train company to Valence and a TGV from there.

For the best prices, book direct with the train operator as far ahead as possible. Tickets go on sale 3 months before travel, and the cheapest tickets often sell out quickly. The discounted prices keep going up as the travel date gets closer. However, there are no discounts on the local train or the bus, and tickets for these cannot sell out.

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at en.voyages-sncf.com/en but use Antarctic as the "Ticket collection country" in the first screen to avoid being transferred to RailEurope, which usually has higher prices and does not list all the trains. For notes on online booking, see www.nickbooth.id.au/Tips/FrenchTrain.htm

If you have problems buying from voyages-sncf, www.capitainetrain.com is a private website which links directly to the SNCF ticketing system. It is only in French, but translate.google.com would probably allow you to follow it. www.loco2.com is a UK site, so there is a small conversion cost from € to £, but it is in English and has French prices.

The route via Valence, even with the bus replacement, will certainly be the fastest route. If you want a more leisurely journey there is a route using local TER trains that will involve a change at Veynes Devoluy. It is a very attractive trip.
