Train from Lyon to Bern

We are planning to spend Chistmas in Switzerland, and esp want to visit Bern. It may work out best for us to fly from London (LHR) to Lyon (Dec 23), spend that afternoon and 1 night there, and travel by train to Bern on Dec 24th. A few questions:

- Is Lyon worth a quick look, and if so, what would be the "must sees" for such a short visit?

- Apx how long (and how much) is the train from Lyon to Bern?

- That train route requires a change in Geneva - Would a standard Lyon-Bern ticket allow us to hop off in Geneva for a few hours and then get on a later train from Geneva to Bern?

- Are the trains running / on a reduced schedule in this area during the Dec 24-25-26 period?

Thanks very much in advance.

Hi there,

To make your own opinion about Lyon, take a look at :

(to me Lyon, is worth not only a quick look, though December is rather cold...)

Lyon - Bern by train takes around 4 hours. Fare is currently 52.30 € one way, 60 € if you take a TGV on the Lyon - Geneva leg.

A standart ticket definitely allows you to a free stop in Geneva on the same day, otherwise ask the seller to make sure (I think it should really be no problem, because Lyon - Geneva is regarded as French domestic, Geneva - Bern as Swiss domestic, fares are just "added").

Services are reduced in France on Xmas day (in Switzerland too, probably), but trains are running anyway.

Kind rgds
