Coming into Lyon by Train

Am still deciding if we should go Paris - Lyon direct or down to Avignon and day trip back to Lyon.

Which stations would we come into, either option, and how do we get to the old town. If coming from Paris will have luggage, Avignon none.

Thanks for any suggestions

You really need to "shout-out" for a Lyon specialist to help you here. I recently traveled between the 2 cities and there are a few stations you can come into in each city. Depends what you really want to see, but I would recommend the high-speed TGV for a day trip.

Lyon has the airport Saint-Exupéry TGV direct from CDG and Part-Dieu TGV station. Avignon TGV is south of the city called Gare Mediterranee.

SNCF regional trains also travel between Avignon Centre and Lyon Parrache, and Gare de Lyon in Paris to Lyon. Lyon has a shuttle bus service, taxis, and great metro system to get around, and Avignon has a shuttle between the two stations and Centre is a 10 min walk into the city. Again, there are many here more helpful than I. also check the SNCF website.

It all depends on what you are going to do after that; I am not sure I understand your trip very well. If you want to visit Lyon AND Avignon, the best way to do it is:

- take the TGV from Paris to Lyon (it is a 1 hour and 55 minutes ride), stay 1 or 2 days in Lyon;

- and then take the TGV from Lyon to Avignon (it is a 1 hour and 15 minutes train ride), stay 1 or 2 nights (OR go there as a day trip from Lyon...);

- finally take a direct TGV back to Paris.

The train station will be Lyon Part-Dieu for both trips. Train station is always pretty clearly mentionned when you check your schedules on SNCF website:
