Safe place to stay

Hi, we are a family of three with a 9-year-old boy, and we are visiting Lyon in late August for five days. We are thinking of renting a flat/apartment in a central area, and although we are going to go back around 9pm every night, is there any place to avoid staying as a family? There are a couple of rooms available around La Part-Dieu station, but from our experience in London, we know the area around the station can be fairly dodgy at night. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Ken.

We just spent two months in a delightful apartment in the Part Dieu area and never had any concerns about our safety, even when walking home from the train station or metro after midnight. Having your own kitchen is a big plus in terms of cost and convenience, especially with a nine year old. Part Dieu is not as picturesque as Vieux Lyon or the Presqu'ile, and the area close by the station is somewhat dirty and noisy, but there are a number of aparthotels in the area on quieter streets several blocks from the station. There's lots of good restos and shopping around Part Dieu, and it's relatively easy to get from there to the other areas on foot or by public transport.

I would pick up a more central and charming location if I were you: anywhere in the Presqu'ile will be safe, convenient and will give you a feel of the city. You'll be in the middle of everything and be able to walk everywhere.

We (retired couple) booked a room at the Quality Suite Lyon Confluence hotel which is a five minute walk from Lyon Perrache station. (We got the TGV from Paris). The reason we booked was that some of the rooms have basic facilities - ours had a full size fridge, microwave and two ring hot plate. This meant that we self catered breakfasts and sometimes evening meal and ate out at lunch time. The trams to the town run right past the front of the hotel (ask for a room overlooking the internal courtyard for a quiet room.) Shopping for food was easy - a shop called Casino just 2mins to the left and a huge Carrefour hypermarche ten minutes stroll to the right ,along with a big new shopping complex and eating out places designed to appeal to 9 year olds! Takaway pizzas two doors away and a boulangerie more or less opposite.Unless you were out very late it would be perfectly safe so long as you didn't wander round the immediate station area when it gets dark. The new complex is as safe as any shopping mall. We were always ready for a rest anyway after a hard days sightseeing and felt this was a useful compromise and saved us some money too. The hotel does not have a bar but we just stocked the fridge with drinks. It does provide breakfast if you want it but at 10 euros it's quite expensive. Wifi is free too.

If you're still searching for a flat rental rather than an hotel: there are many self accomodation rentals, you will find a great selection on Lyon official website:

…lyon-france.com/Accommodation/…

Plus: If you use the search box to search the forum, you'll also get discussions and feedbacks for these:
