Suggestions for 4-5 week stay in a village around Lyon

Planning to take the family (my wife, her mother, 3 kids who will be 6, 4 & 2, and myself) to France in September/October 2014.

We're hoping to stay in a village around 30km from Lyon and have the following wish list:

* Small, picturesque village with good food/wine;

* Rural rather than tourist trap;

* Close to a canal.

There's a few others specific to the accommodation (at least 4 bedrooms, pool etc), but they're the main ones we'd like.

Has anyone got any suggestions based on your experiences of the area?

Regarding the accommodation, hoping to hire a house (perhaps thru Wimdu or similar), any suggestions about that gratefully received also.

I cannot help with village suggestions, but here are some accommodation sites we have used.

Some useful sites are

Most towns and villages have a web presence these days and there is a lot of valuable information out there, including accommodation. Often just googling the name will bring up some ideas.

Good luck.

Fontaines-sur-Saone could be an option. It's a small village to the North from Lyon on the bank of the Saone river. The village stands out for its nice promenade near the river and a plage with half a dozen of decent restaurants (many people from Lyon come there in good weather). The village is linked with Lyon by a direct bus.

But I'd like to point out that 1st and 2nd points on your wish list are very hard to combine, at least in the Lyon region. If the village is NOT a tourist destination, then there will hardly be a big choice of restaurants and wine bars. Most good small villages around Lyon have a couple of stores, a PMU bar, a bar-restaurant, maybe a brasserie and that's all! So you really have to work it out.
