1st Visit - Help With Where to Stay, Please

We will be visiting Lyon for the first time in late September. Can anyone comment on whether it would be preferable to stay on the Rue Mercière in the 1st, Rue Chartreux in the 1st or Rue du Boeuf in Vieux Lyon (the 5th, I think?). We are in our 50s and able to walk to get around. Just wondering if one place or another would require use of public transport or could we get to major sights/museums/restaurants/parks on foot from each of these. Finally, we would like to have quiet at night. Merci!

All three options are good, maybe Rue Chartreux a bit less so as it is situated near the top of the Croix Rousse hill. To get there on foot every time from the lower city will not be that easy, but you can take a metro line C to get uphill. On the positive side this particular area should be quiet in the evening.

Rue Mercière and Rue du Boeuf are the most central of the three. From there you can walk to almost all of the places of interest. Rue de Boeuf is the secondary street in the Vieux Lyon, there is some activity and a dozen of restaurants, but it is much less animated than the principal street of the area - Rue St.Jean - and as such rather quiet. The street is pedestrian, only services and taxis are allowed to pass. Rue Mercière is in the Presqu'Ile area between two rivers and is also partly pedestrian. Its pedestrian part is Lyon's biggest eating street. There are dozens of restaurants (half of them not of very good quality though), so the noise can be a factor till late. If your hotel or apartment is on the "normal" part of the street, it will be less noisy.
