one-way car rental

My family of three have plans to fly into Frankfurt, rent a car, tour Italy and Provence, then return the car somewhere in France. I've just discovered that one-way rentals dropped off in another country is OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE. Can anyone offer any help?

Not really. The rental company will have to pay someone to drivethe car back to Germany.

Drive back to Germany, drop the car and take a train to where you want to go in France.

Or take the train from Frankfurt to Strasbourg and rent a French car.

I'm going through the same thing planning a trip for June. We wanted to take a train from Paris to Zurich then drive up to Frankfurt for our flight home. The drop fee was around $800 or more to pick up in Zurich and return in Germany. Now we're taking a train to Munich and picking up a car there. There are some really good train ticket deals out there so you might want to take a look at that.

Try renting a car in Dallas and tell the rental company you want to drop it off in Mexico City. I bet there's a bit of a charge for that.

Zurich is not very many kilometers away from Germany. You could have just went to a place such as nearby Singen, Germany and rented a car there.
