Train Help

On my upcoming visit to Germany this spring, there is a person who I have met on a previous visit and has become a friend. She is a senior citizen and has a handicapped permit. Further, she tells me that so long as I am with her on regional trains or city public transit anywhere in the country that I could go for free.

I am perfectly willing to buy my own fare tickets and do not wish to take advantage of something that would get me a penalty fare and trouble.

Would someone kindly explain this clearly to me?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Severely handicapped people get a identity card which allows them to travel for free with one escort person. There are no special requirements to make use of this.

I already took adantage of this several times with my grandfather, never experienced problems.

Just remember its not valid on long distance trains (IC/EC, ICE).

As her permit states she can take an escort person for free, there is nothing wrong with this escort person being from Nevada. She has surely done this before and you'll be perfectly fine. She might need someone who carries her bag and gives her a hand when boarding the train and finds her a seat, so here's what you can do if you feel the need to justify your presence;-)

Seriously: There is a campaign about supporting barrier-free travel for people with handicaps and this rule is part of it.
