Cough and cold medication - where to buy?

Hi - have a weeks to Germany coming up and this time we are traveling with hand luggage only. My kid always seems to get a cold after the flight over ( bad airplane air), but this time I won't be able to take his liquid cold meds with us. Is this kind of medication sold in supermarkets or pharmacies without a prescription? Thanks!

You have to go to an Apotheke (pharmacy) and asked what they have pescription free, if you land in FRA there is a big one in the airport, but

there are plenty around so don't worry.

In pharmacies yes, but not in supermarkets.

Drugstores sell a few things like herb infusions, vitamin tablets and a couple of simple cold remedies, but no real medication.

Pharmacies in Germany are usually marked with a big red "A" in gothic script (A for "Apotheke") and you'll find there are plenty of them around. A few have adopted the green cross from abroad but this sign ist not common here.

You should have no problems getting cold meds in the "Apotheke" I have purchased cold meds for my Son the last time I was there, and they always are very friendy and helpful as to give you the correct stuff, sometimes you can find the same thing as in the US.

Note that pharmacies like other stores are closed on Sundays, and may also have reduced hours on Saturday afternoons. However, there should be contact information posted for an "emergency" pharmacy that will be open that you can go to.

I have found that the people working in Apotheke to be very helpful. In large cities, people almost always speak English, so language shouldn't be a problem.

When we are in France, we buy Humex Rhume for colds. I understand that is not available in Germany, but does anyone know what would be an equivalent here?

When travelling, I heavily rely on Orthomol immun. It is not a medicine, but a Nahrungsergänzungsmittel (you just learned a new German word, meaning: dietary supplement). It works miraculously well for me and my wife. It's available in every German pharmacy.
