Hotel Reservations within an hour of Munich by train

We are planning to be traveling through germany during the week of April 13-20, 2013. I have made some inquiries to hotels that were recommended in the Rick Steves guidebook (hotel uhland, litty's hotel) and they are either booked or rates are around $300 euros per night due to an exhibition/fair during that timeframe.

Are there recommendations of places to stay that would be within 1 hour of Munich by train that would increase our chances of availability at a more reasonable price?

Try Prien on Lake Chiemsee, more or less between Munich and Salzburg.

Munich is a transportation hub, so you can travel in any direction to find rooms. If you like small towns, I like both Freising (~25 min by train) or Landshut (~45 min by train) north of Munich.

Use this link to check time frames:

Augsburg is about 45 minutes.

All these are nice places to visit are their own.

Munich itself is a pretty large city, so even if hotels in the center are booked up or have high rates, you can often find better deals at hotels outside the center that are still convinient for sightseeing. Anyplace on the S-Bahn or U-Bahn lines will be good for transportation. Check out the Hotel Laimerhof near Nymphenburg Palace, west of the city center.

In Prien, my preference would be Yachthotel,or Hotel Luitpold am See, both at the Chiemsee lake, or Hotel Bayerischer Hof across from the RR station .

I found some rooms at Hotelpension Haus am Bach in Allershausen near Freising. Is there a train station in Allershausen to allow us to get from our hotel to Munich while we are staying here?

Freising is charming. Have you looked into options there?

Allerhausen is part of the Munich transportation system. You can look up connections here:

www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/homepage/index.html

It appears to be a bus/Sbahn connection to the city center (Marienplatz) that runs every two hours and takes 1 hour and 17 minutes. Long trips with the Munich transportation system are often longer than taking a regional train into the city from some nearby city.

Based on the travel estimates using public transportation from Munchen Marienplatz to Allershausen, the commute time is at least 1 hour. I would rather find a hotel near a regional train station. Looking at a map, is Augsburg a city that would meet that criteria?

Augsburg? Yes. I mentioned above that is about 45 minutes. The way to check any destination is:

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Augsburg

Destination: Munich (München)

A Bayern Ticket would probably be your best bet. It is 26 Euros for two people and covers a full day of travel within Bavaria (Bayern) but only after 9am on weekdays.

To confuse you even more what`s about Starnberg. It is about a 30 minutes ride with the commuter train from Munich. The train runs every 20 minutes till late at night. Here is a hotel option just 3 minutes walk from the train station in Starnberg:

Double room 2 persons with breakfast cost 99-155€.

Here more infos about Starnberg at the Starnberger lake

By the way the Ludwig II has been here quite eoften and died in the Starnberger Lake.
