Southern Germany/Prague itinerary ideas

Just purchased tickets for a 9 day trip to Germany for early October 2013. We will arrive in Frankfurt and leave from Prague. We will have a car as we are meeting old friends who now live in Germany. I am most interested in Southern Germany/Austria as a route to Prague but know next to nothing! Any advice or ideas for an itinerary or route would be much appreciated. We are in our 50's, fit, interested in hiking/food/beer/natural beauty/history/small, beautiful towns and nice people. Many thanks!

We did a similar trip a year ago - it was 15 days and we flew in and out of FRA. The focus of this trip was beer. Here was our itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive FRA, drive to Bamberg

Days 2 and 3: In Bamberg

Day 4: Ausfess area - self-guided brewery walk through the countryside, overnight at a brewery guesthouse.

Day 5: Drive to Munich, stop in Ingolstadt

Days 6 - 8: In Munich, day trip to Andech's Monastery and the Amersee

Day 9: Train/bus to Prague

Days 10-13: In Prague

Day 14: Bus to Nuremburg, overnight Nuremburg

Day 15: Train to FRA, flight home

We had the car for the Ausfess portion of the trip, but didn't really need it for Bamberg since that area is well-served by train. We returned the car upon arrival in Munich since the car isn't really very helpful there anyway. I don't think you want a car in Prague at all - not sure about the restrictions of taking a German car into Czech Republic, so check that out before deciding on your plan.

Bamberg is beautiful. You might also enjoy Regensburg, more or less between Nuremburg and Munich. These cities north of Munich are well served by trains.

If you are interested in the Alps (south of Munich), it's helpful to have a car if you plan to visit any of the little villages. We spent several nights in the village of Reit im Winkl, in the Alps on the border with Austria, and it was beautiful.

All big German car rental companies (Europcar, Avis, Sixt) have restrictions to drive e.g. Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, Porsche, Jaguar, Jeeps and Offroaders to Eastern Europe (including Czech Republic), however simpler cars might be available. You better check their English websites for details, But there are also train and bus connections from Frankfurt (via Nuremberg) in 7 - 8 hours or from Munich in 5 - 6 hours. And in Prague, you certainly do not need a car.

Thanks for the ideas. Regensburg might be a great idea. Thanks also for the auto advice but we will not be renting a car as our friends have a car in Germany.
