Transportation from Passau to Garmish, Germany

On Sept 15, 2013 we will be arriving via Viking Cruise in Passau and need to get to the Edelweis Resort in Garmish where we have reservations starting that day. Looking for best transportation for 4 people. Suggestions for most economical travel?

Most economical would probably be the Bayern or Bavaria train ticket, basically a day pass for the regional trains in the state of Bavaria. It would take about four hours on regional trains, changing in Munich. Once you get to Garmisch, you can take a taxi (or two if you have lots of luggage) to the Edelweis. You can get to the Edelweis from the train station fairly easily on the regular Garmisch bus, but it would be difficult with luggage.

Here's a website with info about the Bayern ticket. Transportation on this ticket would be 34 Euros for four people (total, not per person) but only on the regional or slower trains.

Bayern Ticket will be for sure the cheapest option. The restriction to regional trains plays no role as there are anyway nearly exclusively regional trains serving this route. You'll have however to change trains in Munich.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Passau Hbf

Destination: Garmisch-Partenkirchen

and select as means of transport "only local transport".

You can buy the Bayern Ticket on spot. No advantage of buying it in advance.

I would love to hear how your train trip from Passau to Garmisch plays out. My boyfriend and I will be doing the same train ride the 29th of September when our cruise ends in Passau. I think I have found a wonderful guide in Garmisch, if your in need of one.

We will be using the Bayern Ticket and going to Munich Airport where we will get a rental car from there to Garmisch. And it appears to be cheaper for the 4 of us to use a rental car vs paying for tours from Edelweiss to the same locations most of the time.

Why would you make a detour to the airport just to rent a car? Rent it in Garmisch on arrival. Also, are you sure you needa car for the excursions you are planning?

We will be staying in Munich a couple nights before we fly out Sunday morning when we have to be at the airport early for a 7am flight.....at which time we thought it easiest to drive ourselves that early to the airport. Also, with 4 people, it looks like it will cost less for transportation and save by touring ourselves instead of paying a lot more for bus tours. We are fairly comfortable driving in Germany after having been in the military there for a few years and having traveled all over ourselves driving. After figuring out mileage and gas on the computer to places such as Innsbruck we think we are making the right choice. My husband is just hoping parking is not a problem as we found our car locked in a garage at one time....funny getting it out:) Plus, we have more flexibility and a smaller group can be much better...and we have a language app just in case:) Can't wait for opening day at the Oktoberfest.....Ein beer bitte!!

If you travel on a Bayern Ticket from Passau to Munich Airport you could travel as well to Garmsich-Partenkirchen. Costs (Bayern Ticket) will be the same. And both require one change (either at Freising for a bus to the airport or at München Hauptbahnhof). Even if you take a taxi from Garmisch-Partenkirchen train station to the resort this will be less than renting a car on this day. You can still rent one at Garmisch-Partenkirchen next day. The big rental companies have branches there.

For tours from Garmsich-Partenkirchen - yes.

But return the car when you go back to Munich.

Sa/Su the airport is served 24 hours by S-Bahn trains (on weekdays there is one hour break between 2am and 3am). A mini group (partner) day ticket is EUR 20,40 (entire network).

Note that these day tickets are valid till 6am next day. Thus you can travel to the airport on the day ticket you buy for the day before your departure.

A car is in Munich of no use at all. It will just add to the rental costs also costs for parking. To use public transport to get around is way cheaper and faster. Oktoberfest with a car won't go at all. Neither from the parking nor for them drinking.

Thank you for the information. We will definitely use the partner day pass for the Oktoberfest. We may rethink our plans for the rental car. We did get a really good price on a wagon when we made our reservation about 9 months ago and we have free parking at the Star Inn Hotel there in Munich. My older brother and sister-in-law just don't want to be dragging bags more than we have to. This is only the part of our 5 week vacation between the end of a Viking River cruise and the start of a canalboat trip in England. Thanks for your help as we've been researching and doing all the plans ourselves for about a year now.
