Frankfurt or Mainz, or ???

We will be landing in Frankfurt airport arriving form USA around 7:30 A.M. in mid September. We will be arriving on a Monday, which I believe a lot of museums are closed on that day. We currently have reservations for the Frankfurt Hilton.

Our original plans were to stay in Frankfurt for the night. We would walk around and see the city. Really didn't plan too much for that day just figured get out and walk around after the long flight. The next day we will rent a car to visit Heidleberg and drive to Rothenburg to spend one night there. We will drive to Munich where we will drop off the car and spend 3 nights there before departing from Munich airport to Paris.

We are now considering changes our first night from Frankfurt to Mainz. We would take the train to Mainz and rent the car from there instead of Frankfurt. Would Mainz be a good place to stay? It looks like there is a few things there we could do for the day. Or could someone recommend a different city to stay? Thanks

We recently spent a day and night in Mainz and would definitely return. We stayed at the Hilton and very much enjoyed walking along the river and wandering through town. It was charming.

Thank you for the responses. From what I see Mainz is about 20 min away by train from the airport if I am correct.

Most of the museums in Mainz will indeed be closed on Monday, but you could still see the cathedral, Stephanskirche, the old part of town and the area along the Rhine. The Roman temple in the basement of a shopping center is also open on Mondays: www.roemerpassage.com/isis-heiligtum.php.

Not everything in Frankfurt is closed on Mondays.

The Palmengarten, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, the Geld Museum, and the Karmelite Cloister with the Jörg Ratgeb Wall Paintings, are all open on Mondays. The Goethe Haus also opens at 14:00. Visiting the Kaiserdom is also a possibility, or the Pauls Kirche where Germany held its first parliament in 1848. You an also visit the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall, and the Klein Markt Halle, climb to the top of the Kaiserdom or go to the top of the Main Tower.

The Hilton backs up on the park that completely surrounds the downtown of Frankfurt, and is near to the Alte Oper and the Eschenheimer Turm.

I like Mainz a lot, but Frankfurt certainly has its' share of sights to see, and truly ought to be considered, depending on your interests.
