telephone calls long distance

Is it easy to purchase a long distance calling card and use a public payphone to call long distance in countries like Germany and Italy?

It is possible to buy a calling card and use public pay phones in Germany (don't know about Italy), but public pay phones are not as common as they used to be. The booths used to be bright yellow but now are pink.

What you might find easier to do is buy an inexpensive unlocked triband or quadband GSM phone and then buy a SIM card when you get overseas. You can get a very basic unlocked triband GSM phone on ebay for under $20. You can buy SIM cards in Germany for about 10 Euros, including a credit of almost the same amount for calling home. I have had good experiences with the company Blauworld but others prefer other providers. With Blauworld the cost to call the US is about 8 cents per minute plus a connection charge of about 15 cents.
