Drive Munich to Mittenwald- nice stops along way?

Will be driving Munich to Mittenwald early September.

Any suggestions as to what where to stop for lunch and some sights? Any 'must see's'?

We don't mind going off the beaten path and not on a tight schedule.

Thank you!

Well you could get of from the A95 direction Garmisch in Sindelsdorf and then drive to Benediktbeuren.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benediktbeuern_Abbey

the abbey has a restaurant:

or /and you visit the open air museum Glentleiten (one exit later)

www.glentleiten.de/index.phtml…

from there you should not get back on the highway. Drive further to Kochel am See and then up to the Walchensee. If you like cake and coffee don`t miss Giggerer in Kochel!

here some impressions of the Walchensee:

Susi P's route is really very nice.

Another, somewhat longer route: From Munich take the Autobahn A- 96 west. Exit at Inning (#30) and drive about 15km along the Ammersee to Herrsching and Kloster Andechs. (Andechs Monastery). Visit the Monasteey and try some of their famous bee , potato salad and Leberkaese, although ask for a taste of the latter before you order it. It is not to everybody's taste.

Get back onto the autobahn and head furthe west to Landsberg am Lech (exit# 26 or 25). Picturesque old town, with castle which is famous for having been the jail where Hitler wrote" Mein Kampf" after the Munich Beer Hall Putsch.

After visiting Landsberg, head south on the B-17 to Fuessen. Visit Neuschwanstein castle, at least from the exterior., If yoiu are running well in terms of time, there is one detour worth taking between Landsberg and Fuessen. In Steingaden, turn left (east) off the highway and follow the signs to the Wieskirche. The whole round trip is about 30km. The Wieskirche is a beautiful baroque abby, located in the maedwss, with the Fuessen mountains in the backgoroun.

From Fuessen head south on the Austrian B-179 to Leermos and then east on the B-187/German B-23 to Garmisch Partenkirchen. This last stretch takes you along the Zugspitze mountain massif.

In Garmisch pick up the B-2 to Mittenwald.

I am not trying to persuade you to take one or the other suggestedx route, just wanted to give you an alternative.

Excellent! Always better to have more options than less :-)
