Train from Dusseldorf Flughafen to Cologne HBF

We're arriving on an early morning flight to Dusseldorf (6 AM) and need to get to Cologne. Is the train a convenient option from the airport to the Cologne HBF? I'm unable to determine from the Bahn.com website the cost per ticket - any expert knowledge? Has anyone done this?

Thanks.

The fare is 10,80€ on local trains. There is direct service on the S11 line from DUS to Cologne every 20 minutes or so at most hours of the day.

Fares and schedules can be found at the local transit authority website:

The direct S-Bahn needs however approx. 85 minutes. It's faster to take the SkyTrain from the terminal to the airport train station and a RE train from there (approx. 50 minutes combined).

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal

Destination: Köln Hbf

and select as means of transport "only local transport".

VRS tariff applies. Single ticket is as said EUR 10,80 (for either option). With this ticket you can also proceed in Cologne by tram or bus to your final destination in case it's not near the Hbf anyway.

Can I purchase a train ticket inside the flughafen for the RE1, or RE5, train to Cologne and therefore not have to pay the added cost for the SkyTrain ride to the flughafen bahnhof? If I can do is, are there automated machines, or is there an attendant?

There are no added costs. The VRS ticket for EUR 10,80 is a zone-to-zone (city-to-city) local public transport ticket. You can travel on it from any point in one city to any point in the other city. Covered are regional trains, S-Bahn, trams, buses - and also the SkyTrain.

There are ticket machines at the terminal. And also the DB travel center is at the airport terminal - not at the airport train station (Flughafen Bahnhof).

Excellent, so that means that I can travel on any train (within the ticket's time allottment) and not have to worry about making, or missing, a specific train - right?
