Mid-Late July 2014 Transportation 7 pax to Munich

Hi, I posted in the Copenhagen forum and didn't get any response, so I am trying here. Some other thoughts I had. Rent 2 cars? Does anyone know of a larger van I could rent? Any ideas are appreciated.

Hello. We will be taking a cruise starting and ending in Copenhagen. Do not know the exact dates. There are 7 of us. 1 luggage and 1 carry on each. We want to go to Munich to visit relatives. Half of us have seen Germany and many other countries before - the other half no. We are trying to find options to reach Munich. We would like the least affordable option, but will factor in ease of travel - if that costs more, fine. We have 3 elderly pax. They can walk, but slowly and pull their own luggage. We would like to do some sightseeing on the way to Munich. We looked into 1 way car rentals and it was very expensive drop off charge when getting from Copenhagen. We only know how to drive automatic transmission, so couldn't find a van big enough with that. There is airplanes. And I can look into the trains - haven't researched that yet so don't know about pricing. Are there any other ideas anyone has?

We are very open with our plans for now. For example, we could even take a train to Berlin, and then hire a car/van. Or we could travel through Benelux. We are thinking 2-3 days to reach Munich. Stay Munich at least 2 days. Perhaps do day trips south into the other countries from Munich. Stay in Europe at least a week post cruise. Thanks.

A logical train route would be Copenhagen - Hamburg - Nuremberg - Munich.

The train goes on the Copenhagen to Hamburg route between Roedby and Puttgarden on board of a ferry.

From Nuremberg as base you could visit the medieval cities of Bamberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber

.

WIth 7 persons you qualify for group discounts on the trains. You can find prices / get quotes through this page:

The cheapest specials for the trains are from EUR 39.

A standard fare ticket which you can also buy on spot is EUR 180,40. This ticket is flexible, valid 1 month and allows stopovers en route.

The question is if this is a question at all. By train this is an 11 hours trip. A flight would be much faster. But no stopovers if you fly. To travel this by train makes in first place sense with 1 or 2 stopovers en route. But with these stopovers flying is no alternative anymore.

To get an idea about a flight look at SAS website. It doesn't have July 2014 loaded in yet, but for the end of June 2014, it shows a Go fare (non-refundable advanced purchase) from CPH to MUC of $88.84:

http://www.flysas.com/en/us/

Also, the train will take a long time from Copnehagen to anywhere in Germany. To see travel times and fares go to:

.

Be aware that If you rent cars in Germany, be aware that if you rent from a pick-up location of a railway station or airport, there is a 19% surcharge on the total rental fee, so other locations are considerably cheaper:

If you go to any car rental agency's website, they have a vehicle guide.

For example, Hertz website shows this vehicle available in Germany:

(U) Mercedes Vito - GPS or Similar

Premium, Passenger Van, Automatic, Air

•9 Passengers

•3 Large Suitcases, 1 Small Suitcase

•Automatic Transmission

•Air Conditioning

•0 CO2 emmissions

However, whether it would fit all your luggage even with 2 extra seats is probably debatable.
