Countryside and walks en route Dunkirk to Berlin

We're driving from the UK to Berlin - getting the ferry to Dunkirk. Looking for somewhere nice to spend a few days en route to do some walking. We're travelling on the E34/E30 roughly via Essen, Hanover and Potsdam. Any suggestions? We want forests/countryside/easy walks. Thank you very much!

The Harz mountains, some kilometers to the south of Hanover and Germanys northernmost mountains, are great for a few days. The region offers many perfectly preserved towns full of timber-framed houses, Romanesque churches, the largest narrow-gauge steam train network (which goes up to the highest mountain), endless forests etc..

This is a great site with thousands of pictures of the area:

For pictures of beautiful towns click on: Quedlinburg, Goslar, Celle, Wernigerode, Stolberg, Einbeck or Duderstadt. For churches: Halberstadt (beautiful "French" cathedral), Gernrode or Hildesheim. For landscapes and hiking: Wandern im Harz (hiking in the Harz mountains), Landschaften (landscapes).

Thank you. That's really helpful - I'll have a look at that area.

As a matter of interest.... why are you taking that huge detour through France? By far the easiest way of getting to Berlin by car is to take the overnight ferry from Harwich to Hoek van Holland.

Cost basically Aviatrix. 5 of us, so just so much cheaper going Dover/Dunkirk than the longer crossing, even allowing for extra petrol, stop in hotel etc.
