Renting a car

I'm thinking about traveling to germany and renting a car to get between towns (ie berlin to hamburg). Is that doable? Would anyone suggest otherwise?

Hi Semax1

Yes, it's certainly doable, but it would be nice to know if you're only planning on traveling between Berlin and Hamburg, or if you plan on seeing other places.

If you're going to simply go from Point A to Point B, both of which happen to be large cities, then I would recommend the train.

But if you're wanting to get out and explore the countryside and go from village to village, then a car may be better suited to your needs.

You can read about driving in Germany here:

www.gettingaroundgermany.info/auto.shtml

It will be expensive (unleaded gas is currently running about $8.40 a gallon based on the current exchange rate), and finding parking in the larger cities will be a challenge.

For the trains, you can do all of your planning on the Deutsche Bahn (German Railroad) website:

http://www.bahn.de

and you can read about rail travel on these sites:

www.gettingaroundgermany.info/bahn.shtml

Enjoy your trip.

Hi again,

I forgot to mention that you may want to search the forum and read all the negative comments about renting a car from Thrifty-Terstappen in Germany. More bad experiences than good, it appears.
