Suggested European Christmas itinerary?

I briefly lived in Schweinfurt, Germany (Bavaria) and absolutely LOVED the Christmas season there. I would like to take my husband back to Germany and other countries on ~10-12 day trip around the holidays next year (2014), and I would love to hear suggestions of what we should and shouldn't include. Ideally, I want to work in a visit to London/GB and/or Paris, as I've never been to either before. We also want to ski somewhere...Black Forest, Alps, we're open to suggestions!

Lastly--how do you best recommend getting around--rent a car, Eurorail, etc.?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

With only 10-12 days stick to two places, that could be London or Paris and Bavaria, book an open jaw or multi city ticket so you can fly into London/Paris and out of Munich or Frankfurt.

Eurorail is a reseller that charges top prices, for train travel check http://www.seat61.com/ book with the national train company, http://www.sncf.com/en/passengers http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml or http://www.rail.co.uk/ with Bahn.de you can get very good savings if you book 92 days in advance, but you have to take the booked train or loose your ticket.

If you want to visit christmas markets you have to come before the 22nd of December to be on the sure side they are open, not all stay open until the 24th, for skiing you most likely have to go to the Alps unless we get an early winter next year, most of the time we get more snow in Jan. and Feb.

If you want to rent a car I suggest you'll have a look here http://www.gemut.com/ in case you want to rent I hope you know how to drive in wintery conditions, major highways are cleared but if you hit a massiv snowfall it can take some time.

One other place that I might recommend (even though I know London and Paris are high on your list), is Vienna.

I was in Vienna a year ago at it was quite special at Christmastime. The city streets were beautifully decorated; there were a number of diverse Christmas markets; and I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the Vienna Boy's Choir Advent Concert in the Musikverein.

I spent 4 nights there which gave me a good introductory feel for the city and all that it had to offer (it was my first time there).

You could spend maybe 4-5 nights in Munich; perhaps a couple of nights in the Alps skiing (Garmisch-Partenkirchen??); and then finish out your trip in Vienna. Heck, you might even find time for a night in Salzburg, too (another favorite city of mine).

My trip actually began in Frankfurt; then to my grandfather's hometown, Schöntal; then to Würzburg; Munich, and finally Vienna. I drove from Frankfurt to Würzburg, then took the train from Würzburg to Munich and Vienna (and back to Frankfurt). The train was much easier and less worrisome, as the weather did turn and there was some snow to contend with.

Enjoy your trip.

I notice you are from Charlottesville. If you don't have experience driving in snowy conditions, do not rent a car. It might snow while you are there and you could be in real trouble.
