When? This plays a big role. On short notice to find discounted offers is difficult, if not impossible.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Zürich HB

Start: Basel SBB

Start: Basel Bad Bf

Destination: Düsseldorf Hbf

For Basel Bad Bf to Düsseldorf Hbf the domestic German tariff applies.

www.easyjet.com flies from EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) to Düsseldorf (DUS). However not daily. Prices start however from EUR 15 per person (luggage is however extra).

Thanks for your inputs. that helps. i am going to be in Dusseldorf for abt 3 days...can you please recommend some interesting places to cover? Also, how safe is it to travel a little later in the night and anything one should keep in mind when travelling from a safety point of view? thanks.

EC train means traveling through the Middle Rhine Valley. One of the most scenic railways in Germany.

Düsseldorf: river promenade, Media Harbor (modern architecture), Königsallee (short "Kö" - the most posh shopping street in Germany), Altstadt (old town - brewery pubs etc.)

Cologne is a worthwhile day trip (cathedral, museums). 30 min by RE trains.

Neanderthal Museum is just outside of Düsseldorf if you're interested in the history of humanity.

Totally safe.

Normal precautions will do for sure. These cities are among the safest ones on this planet.
