Heidelberg to Cologne including Rhine Cruise

Hi

We will be travelling from Heidelberg to Cologne by train in September and are hoping to include a couple of hours cruising from Bingen to Boppard.

Is it possible to do this leaving Heidelberg after 8am and arriving at Cologne airport by 6pm?

I've been comparing de bahn and KD cruise timetables and it seems like it might be a bit tight.

Is it far from the train station to the cruise dock as we will be carrying luggage?

And what would be the best type of ticket to buy? Is it possible to purchase one that includes

the train trips and cruise.

Thanks for all suggestions and advice in advance!

It is possible if you leave Heidelber early enough but you will not have much time for sightseeing.

In Bingen there are several stations. Bingen(Stadt), served only by local trains, is close to the boat landing. Bingen Hbf is further away, but there are taxis. In Boppard it takes less than 10 minutes to walk to the station.

The type of train ticket depends on how many you are, and whether you are travelling during the week or the weekend (makes a difference for local trains). For IC trains it depends on whether you can decide on a specific train well in advance.

Deutsche Bahn have some good deals for local trains, but on weekdays they are not good before 9 a.m.

What you could do is get 2 savings price tickets from bahn.de. Sale of these tickets starts 92 days before the trip, and the good deals sell out quickly. These tickets are good for long distance trains (IC, EC, ICE) but may also include sections with local trains.

With the Sparpreis you are tied to the long distance train(s) you selected. E.g. if you decide to take the IC from Heidelberg to Mainz at 8:25 you cannot travel at any other hour. For connecting local trains (like the MRB trains between Mainz, Bingen, Boppard and Koblenz) this is different, you can take any of these on the same day.

Instead of buying two tickets from Heidelberg to Bingen and another two from Boppard to the airport, it is probably cheaper to buy two tickets from Heidelberg to the airport that allow you to break your trip at Bingen(Stadt) and Boppard. On Bahn.de, select these places as intermediate stops and say you want to spend something like two or three hours in each. You really have to play around..

There are two lines from Koblenz to Cologne airport, one via Cologne main station (Köln Hbf, served by long distance trains and local trains) and one via Troisdorf, served by local trains. Check Boppard to Köln/Bonn Flughafen to see what I mean and decide which trains to take. This also influences the times you need to enter at your intermediate stops.

I hope this does not sound too complicated.

So my advice is: Take the IC train from Heidelberg to Mainz and an MRB train to Bingen(Stadt). Do the cruise to Boppard. Depending on when you leave Heidelberg, this will be the cruise at 10:30 or 11:30. Spend some time in Boppard and take the train to Koblenz.

Depending on what your ticket says, travel to the airport via Köln Hbf or Troisdorf. If the Koblenz to Cologne section specifies a long distance train, you must use that train. If it just says "NV" for Boppard to Köln/Bonn Flughafen, you can use any local train.

This post is not meant to deter people from using Deutsche Bahn, btw.
